Reduction in Hospital Readmissions seen with Vein Illumination

Long Island, NY, January 28, 2014 – St. James Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, a top sub acute healthcare service, short-term rehabilitation and long term care facility today announced that AccuVein vein illumination has improved their outcomes and resident care. The AccuVein is the world’s only hand-held, non-contact vein visualization device. It highlights the patient’s vasculature on the skin’s surface in order to improve access to veins for IV starts and blood draw.

St. James has found that the AccuVein vein illumination reduces the incidence of hospital readmissions and avoids the need to call an outside agency to start IVs. Also, since purchasing the device, St. James has seen nurse confidence in venipuncture increase significantly.
Reducing hospital readmissions is more important than ever since the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have begun penalizing hospitals for excessive readmission rates. Hospital readmissions can result from the inability to access veins to deliver critical medications to treat common ailments such as congestive heart failure, sepsis and urinary tract infections. Access to veins in sick and elderly residents is particularly challenging, as these individuals can easily become dehydrated and often have rolling veins.

“Since we began using the AccuVein device there is seldom a need to call out for help starting an IV. This is a big time and cost savings for us. And the nurses love it.” said Karen Irwin, MSN, RN, the Director of Nursing at St. James.
“We are seeing Long Term Care facilities everywhere embrace vein illumination as they recognize it as a cost savings modality and as an opportunity to improve resident care and reduce the rate of hospital readmissions,” said Daniel Delaney, AccuVein COO.
