Vein Illumination Leader Recognized for Photonics Innovation

Long Island, New York (December 5, 2013) – AccuVein Inc. (accuvein.com) has been named an award finalist in the 2014 Prism Awards for Photonics Innovation in the Life Science and Biophotonics category. The competition recognizes new products and inventions that break with conventional ideas, solve problems, and improve life through the generation and application of light-based technologies, optics and photonics.

The AccuVein vein visualization device helps healthcare professionals locate veins by displaying a map of the patient’s vasculature directly on the surface of the skin. Locating peripheral vasculature is invaluable in many medical procedures that require vein access or avoidance. Accessing a vein for IV starts, blood draw and sclerotherapy procedures, as well as avoiding veins in surgery and cosmetic procedures, are all important applications of the device.

“With such impressive products and such varied applications, selecting finalists was indeed challenging for the judges,” said SPIE CEO Eugene Arthurs. “Competitors include larger, well-established companies as well as newer and smaller firms from throughout the world working in a wide variety of sectors. The broad range reflects the extensive reach and power of photonics in our lives, and is a tribute to the creativity of our extraordinarily entrepreneurial community.”

“More than a billion venipunctures are performed annually and as many as 40% require multiple sticks. AccuVein’s augmented reality technology projects a visible vein pattern, enabling clinicians to see the invisible,” said AccuVein Vice President of Engineering Joe Zott. “Our selection as a Prism Award Finalist further validates the AccuVein as the vein illumination tool of choice and solidifies AccuVein as a leader in medical imaging.”

Entries are judged by an independent panel of experts including industry executives, leading academic researchers, venture capitalists and past Prism Award winners. Winners will be announced by industry leaders on February 6th during SPIE Photonics West in San Francisco at a gala banquet that has become one of the largest gatherings of CEOs and other VIPs in the photonics industry.
