AccuVein Found to Increase Venous Access Success in Infants and Toddlers
Independent Study Shows Use of Vein Visualization Results in Fewer Sticks, Less Pain
AccuVein Inc. (www.accuvein.com), the global leader in vein visualization, today announced the publication of a study that found the use of AccuVein vein visualization increases the success of peripheral IVs placement in children ages 0-3 years of age. The study evaluated the impact of AccuVein on the first attempt success rate, number of attempts to start an IV, the duration of the PIV procedure, and the pain levels of the children.
The study results showed striking improvements across all evaluated metrics. First attempt success rates, which tend to be low for infants and small children whose veins are small and difficult to access, increased from 40.7% without vein visualization to 74.1% with AccuVein, an 82% improvement.
The other metrics showed similar improvements: Number of attempts, or the number of times these infants and young children were stuck, were reduced by 40% (from 2.41 to 1.44 attempts); procedure time was reduced by 74% (from 169 seconds to 44 seconds); the pain level, which was evaluated by an observing nurse, showed a 43% reduction.
“We are thrilled that such definitive and overwhelmingly positive results were seen in these youngest of patients, said AccuVein CEO Ron Goldman. “infants present one of the biggest venous access challenges and this shows the significant impact AccuVein can have on minimizing their pain and improving their care.”
The study, “Impact of Peripheral Venous Catheter Placement with Vein Visualization Device Support on Success Rate and Pain Levels in Pediatric Patients Aged 0 to 3 Years” has been published in Pediatric Emergency Care, a respected peer-reviewed journal that is dedicated to the care of the ill or injured child.
The study abstract is available at https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov.
